By Kevin McGill and Stephen Smith | Associated PressNEW ORLEANS — The heating element removed from Monique Plaisance’s water heater in September was disintegrating, streaked with rust and covered in a dry crust. She blamed the corrosion on the water piped in from the area’s longtime drinking water source: the Mississippi River. It was a similar story not far away at the Black Velvet Oyster Bar and Grill.“We’re draining the hot water heater every few days to get most, or a good bit, of the salt out of that,” owner Byron Marinovich said. “The ice machine has been off since the third week of April.”Plaisance’s home and Marinovich’s restaurant are in the Buras community of rural Plaquemines Parish, roughly 60 miles (about 96 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans and 20 to 30 miles (32 to 48 kilometers) upriver from where the Mississippi flows into the Gulf of Mexico. As in New Orleans, drinking water in the parish is drawn from the riv...

¿Qué es la Nakba y por qué sigue siendo central para los palestinos?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:53:36 GMT

Denver DA seeks to try teen as adult for 'cold-blooded murder'

DENVER (KDVR) — Remi Cordova was just 14 years old when prosecutors say he shot and killed 32-year-old Pam Cabriales because of a minor fender bender."I can't think of another 14-year-old that we've charged or tried to charge as an adult since I've been in office," Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said.On Monday, McCann's office will try to convince a Denver judge that Cordova's crime was so horrific that the teen, now 17 years old, should be tried as an adult in the Feb. 20, 2021, shooting at Interstate 25 and Colfax Avenue. The judge has set aside four days for what's called a "reverse transfer hearing" to determine if Cordova's first-degree murder case should be transferred from juvenile to adult court."Unfortunately, he's only 14, but he's capable of killing someone in a very, you know, just cold-blooded way with no indication of remorse or concern or anything of that nature," McCann said.Pam Cabrieles (Courtesy: Alex Cabriales)Woman killed with high-powered rifleAccording to...

EVERETT – Down a few starters, Everett had to regroup in the second half to claim its 26th Greater Boston League title in 31 seasons. Thanks to short field positions and a couple timely turnovers, the Crimson Tide outscored Lynn Classical 34-6 in the second half en route to a 43-12 victory over the Rams at Everett Memorial Stadium on Friday night.“We played together,” said Everett coach Justin Flores about the strong second half. “The defense played well all game and the offense finally started to play well together.”To start the third, both offenses were stuck in a rut. With Lynn Classical (5-3) backed up in their own end zone, Everett (7-1) forced a short punt to start their second drive of the half at the Rams’ 12.Three plays later, Boston College-commit Christian Zamor rushed it in from two yards out to make it a 16-6 Crimson Tide lead.“I looked at him in the eyes and I told him that we are going to get on his back a little bit,” Flores said about what he said to Zamor at the hal...
