GOP set to encourage early voting, mail balloting after years of opposite messaging to its voters

ATLANTA (AP) — After years of criticizing mail voting and so-called ballot harvesting as ripe for fraud, Republicans at the top of the party want to change course. They are poised to launch aggressive get-out-the-vote campaigns for 2024 that employ just those strategies, attempting to match the emphasis on early voting Democrats have used for years to lock in many of their supporters well ahead of Election Day. The goal is to to persuade voters who support GOP candidates that early voting techniques are secure and to make sure they are able to return their ballots in time to be counted, thus putting less pressure on Election Day turnout efforts. It marks a notable shift from the party’s rhetoric since 2020, when then-President Donald Trump was routinely sowing doubt about mail voting and encouraging his voters to wait and vote in-person on Election Day. As recently as last year, Republican activists peddling the stolen election narrative were telling GOP voters who received mai...

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are drifting in mixed trading Thursday, continuing this week’s lull as Wall Street waits for several big events next week. The S&P 500 was 0.3% higher, and it hasn’t moved by more than 0.4% in any day this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 89 points, or 0.3%, at 33,754, as of 11:25 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.8% higher. The majority of stocks in the S&P 500 and across Wall Street were falling, though, after a report showed the highest number of workers applied for unemployment benefits since October 2021. Until now, the job market has remained remarkably solid and helped keep the economy out of a recession. GameStop was one of the bigger movers, falling 19.4% after ousting its CEO who was brought in to turn around the struggling video game retailer. The company, whose stock became a sensation in 2021 during the meme-stock craze, also reported weaker revenue for the latest quarter than expected. On the winning side was ...

While some PGA stars are still fuming about being blindsided by the tour’s controversial merger with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, concerns at the RBC Canadian Open have shifted to actual fumes — from raging wildfires.Players teed off for the opening round of Canada’s lone PGA tour stop at the Oakdale Golf & Country Club in Toronto on Thursday morning with a now-familiar smoky haze shielding the sun.The air quality index in the GTA on Thursday is expected to reach its highest level since the smoke from out-of-control fires began blanketing the area on Monday. In a statement, the PGA said it would monitor the air quality “closely” and take action if it’s warranted.“When the AQI is greater than 300 and is sustained for one full hour, play may be temporarily suspended under a Red Level 2 Air Quality warning,” the Tour said. For context, the AQI in New York City reached an all-time high level of 401 on Wednesday, casting an eerie orange glo...
