CHICAGO (AP) — Hunter Greene saw the no-hit bid come to an end and went back to his conversation with the strength coach. The right-hander was out of the game after throwing six hitless innings. The Cincinnati Reds were well on their way to a 9-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday, and that’s what mattered to him.“There’s going to be growing pains,” Greene said. “I’m trying to figure stuff out. We have a young group, young core of players. They’re going to be figuring things out. We’re working hard every single day. We’re putting pieces together, and it’s gonna pay off very soon.”Greene (1-4) set the tone as the Reds came within six outs of the majors’ first no-hitter this season. He matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in picking up his first win in 11 starts this season. There have been 17 no-hitters by Cincinnati, the most recent coming on May 7, 2021, when Wade Miley tossed one against the Cleveland Guardians.Greene had the Reds...LIV Golf Washington D.C. NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees manager Aaron Boone was handed a one-game suspension following his latest ejection and admitted his arguments may have created an image in the minds of umpires.“Well, I think I’ve earned that reputation,” he said Friday before Major League Baseball suspended him for one game and fined him.Michael Hill, MLB’s senior vice president for on-field operations, made the announcement. MLB said the discipline was “for his recent conduct toward major league umpires, including the actions following his ejection from Thursday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.”Boone was forced to sit out Friday night’s series opener against San Diego. He was ejected for the major league-high fourth time this season, the most among big league managers, when he became angry with Edwin Moscoso’s strike zone during a 3-1 loss. Boone held up four fingers while arguing in the middle of the third inning, signaling Boone thought the plate umpire missed four pitches. WASHINGTON (AP) — Upending debt-ceiling talks with time running short, the government announced a new June 5 default deadline late Friday, dragging the White House and Republicans toward another week of cliff-edge negotiations over cutting spending and raising the nation’s legal debt limit. The new date, set out in a letter from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, came with Americans and the world already highly concerned about U.S. brinkmanship. In a blunt warning, Yellen said failure to act by the new date would “cause severe hardship to American families, harm our global leadership position and raise questions about our ability to defend our national security interests.” Anxious retirees were already making contingency plans for missed checks, with the next Social Security payments due next week. The new deadline, a week from Monday, is four days later than earlier expected. Yellen said all “extraordinary measures” Treasury has resorted to would be exhausted.

DENVER (AP) — Denver Nuggets guard Bruce Brown has been using the long layoff before the start of the NBA Finals to work on his game — his golf game.“First day of golf I played pretty well,” Brown recounted. “The second day was terrible.”On Friday, it was back to the business of Brown hitting the shots he hits the best — jumpers — as the Nuggets returned to the court for a light practice. Game 1 of the franchise’s first appearance in an NBA Finals is still nearly a week away and their opponent has yet to be determined, with Boston and Miami heading into Game 6 of its Eastern Conference finals series. The rest has certainly been welcome. The rust, though, does become a concern. “It’s impossible to keep your rhythm if you’re not playing games,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “You can do whatever you want in practice, but there’s no way you can replicate playing in an NBA playoff game.”The Nuggets celebrated sweeping the Los Angeles Lakers on the plane ride ...Kershaw set to start Saturday for Dodgers after coming off bereavement list

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was set to start Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays after being activated from the bereavement list Friday.Kershaw went on the list Monday following the death of his mother, Marianne Tombaugh. The left-hander took the loss Sunday at St. Louis to fall to 6-4, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings.“I talked to Clayton a little bit today,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He certainly feels much better than he did the last couple starts. There is some kind of overall body fatigue, the ball wasn’t coming out well, so he’s in a considerably better spot going into tomorrow.”Also, Julio Urías, the Los Angeles left-hander who left his start May 18 after three innings because of a strained left hamstring, was scheduled to throw off a mound Saturday.“Everything I’ve heard, he’s trending in the right direction,” Roberts said. “He’s going to throw a bullpen tomorrow, and so after that then we...FOX31 viewers send in photos of hail and rain across the Front Range

DENVER (AP) — A federal judge is weighing whether to let a Colorado high school student wear a Mexican and American flag sash at her graduation this weekend after the student sued the school district. The case is the latest dispute in the U.S. about what kind of cultural graduation attire is allowed at commencement ceremonies, with many focusing on tribal regalia. Denver Public Schools releases new version of safety plan Attorneys for Naomi Peña Villasano argued in a hearing Friday in Denver that the school district decision violates her free speech rights. They also said that it's inconsistent for the district to allow Native American attire, but not Peña Villasano's sash representing her heritage. The sash has the Mexican flag on one side and the United States flag on the other. “I’m a 200 percenter — 100% American and 100% Mexican," she said at a recent school board meeting in Colorado's rural Western Slope.“The district is discriminating against the expression of different cul...Latest news
